Godmother of Soul Patti LaBelle Sparks at Celebrate Brooklyn!
On a cool and breezy Tuesday (June 4), BRIC, the leading presenter of free cultural programming in Brooklyn, launched its 41st season of Celebrate Brooklyn! in Prospect Park. People waited in line eagerly for two hours to see R&B legend Patti LaBelle on opening night. Seats for the free concert were first come, first served, so it was essential to arrive early.
Patti LaBelle is global icon whose musical style transcended generations for more than half a century. She is a singer, actress, entrepreneur, and a diva in her own right. But, most importantly, Patti’s voice is completely different from other artists. It is so distinct and has an arousing and emotive sound, whether she is performing a fast or slow song.
Thirty minutes into the evening’s proceedings, the soulful performer arrived at the Prospect Park Bandshell. She delivered her fearless, sassy, comical, and fashionista personality on stage — and fans wouldn’t have it any other way.
Music lovers were ready to sing her songs, word for word, and it all started with her one of her classics, “If Only You Knew.” She went on to sing “Feels Like Another One,” “The Right Kind of Lover,” “My Love, Sweet Love,” “Lady Marmalade,” “If You Asked Me Too,” “Love Need and Want You Baby,” and performed samples from various other classic soul artists.
While introducing her band, Patti shared center stage with her background singer, B Slade, who truly electrified and sparked the crowd. Slade really showed off his singing abilities when he performed “On My Own” with Patti. He wasn’t Michael McDonald but he added the ideal zest to the song.
Fans demonstrated a high admiration for the singer, which intensified her love for performing. Patti LaBelle continues to present her ebullient delivery through song, which is one reason why her records are unforgettable and her career has expanded into other mediums: television, business, cooking and film. Patti’s segment reminded people that she was one of the original musical trendsetters who paved the way for other female artists within the last 60 years.
