Dyme-A-Duzin: True Hip Hop and Soul
Donnovan Blocker, better known as Dyme-a-Duzin, is a Brooklyn-raised hip hop artist who strives to stay true to his Brooklyn roots in his music. This year the musician has released two albums both in relation to one another entitled Training, and more recently Ghetto Olympics 2, as a follow up to the former. This release was created with the intention to spread inspiration for people to work on their goals, regardless of the opportunities they were provided. As quoted from the artist “My Ghetto Olympics album/brand basically represents people in low income areas who strive as hard as an Olympian to achieve their goals. Regardless of obstacles the ‘ghetto’ or ‘hood’ might put in our way.’”
Dyme is no newbie to the music scene having written and recorded music since his teenage years. He was also part of a group called Phony PPL, who made a mark in Brooklyn’s burgeoning hip hop scene in 2010 , and performed with the likes of Erykah Badu, Talib Kweli, Joey Bada$$ and The Roots. His early association with Warner Bros. Records was also a significant milestone for this performer, as it has led to further connections and musical collaborations with performers such as Brooklyn born and raised Fabulous.
Dyme-a-Duzin told Brooklyn Roads how he was inspired to create music since he was a child. One of his biggest influences growing up was seeing and hearing Michael Jackson perform. Dyme says being raised in a Christian household, he did not have much opportunity for musical exposure, but MJ as well as a local rapper Q The Prophet sparked his enthusiasm to make music.
Dyme-a-Duzin explains that his Brooklyn lifestyle has been a contribution to his musical development as well. The talent that comes from the borough is part of his experience. He mindfully expressed to Brooklyn Roads that his music grows with him as he gains experience in life. “As an artist and person I’m ever evolving. I’m excited about the journey as well as releasing new music.”
