Cindy Alexander’s “Messy” Gets Rugged and Real About Life
Singer, songwriter and storyteller Cindy Alexander has a magical way with words and phrases in her latest album Messy. In the 10-track album, this indie artist expresses everything from ballads to anthems and everything in between.
To start off, the first track on the album, “Long Way To Go” transports listeners with a thirty-second instrumental intro reminiscent of a Fleetwood Mac era. Lyrics on this track juxtapose its instrumentation, as Alexander sings about a carefree drive with guitars strumming along accordingly, yet there is a hidden message.
Two singles off the album “Life #9” and “Call Us What We Are” were both born out of life lessons Alexander expressed realizing after having conversations with her husband and her co-writer.
“Life #9” aligns best with Alexander’s known sound to date, where lyrics like “losing tread and I’m tripping on nothing, rules don’t apply” create a coming of age anthem, something she resonates with closely as a parent to children entering adulthood.
In “Call Us What We Are,” an edgy pop-rock sound with a smidge of angst emits in which you can’t help but feel like you’re dancing in your teenage bedroom.
The title track of the album, “Messy,” embraces exactly what life is as per Alexander; messy. The rugged sounds created by the inclusion of electric guitars and production alike paint a vivid picture for the not so neat things in life that are always bound to come up.
Alexander has previously expressed that she reflected the track onto all the ups and downs life offers, saying “Sometimes I am gracefully in command of my chaos, and other times I trudge through kicking and screaming. But I have the experience and perspective to work it through in my creative space.”
A particular favorite is a soulful track towards the end of the album “I Belong to Everyone,” where Alexander lets listeners into intrusive thoughts that are relatable and relaxing at once.
Having experimented with many sounds throughout this album, Alexander’s storytelling lyrics remain true and deep. Each track, more surprising than the last, thus making listeners think both about the weight lyrics carry, as well as a barometer on whether to sing and dance along, or to just soak everything in.
You can find Messy wherever you stream music, and can look forward to more musical projects she will share later this year.
