As part of the Dumbo Improvement District’s current Wednesday evening “Live at the Archway” summer music series, Brooklyn Roads caught an extensive, spirited set from Bandits on the Run, on June 28. The Brooklyn trio comprises guitarist Adrian Enscoe, cellist Sydney Shepherd, and multi-instrumentalist Regina Strayhorn, each of whom sang strong leads on their share of the 19 songs. Their distinctly different voices also blended beautifully in their harmonies.

The band kicked things off with their most recent single, “You Have Changed,” an examination of a love gone wrong, followed by “Love in the Underground,” which they described as an “origin story song” about the members’ chance meeting while busking on the NYC subways. The latter featured a gorgeous a capella harmony intro leading to strong Shepherd vocal, with Strayhorn changing things up with her melodica playing.

Other highlights included a medley of songs they wrote for a musical adaptation of Shakespeare’s “As You Like It” (all three Bandits also have theatrical backgrounds); “Paris” from their debut album, The Criminal Record  and  four other tunes from their current EP, Now Is the Time. Among those were the bluesy “Spellbound”; the tempestuous love ballad “Hurricane”  and the rousing, defiant “We Battle Giants,” which was a fitting close to the concert.
